Quick answer

Spring and autumn

If you just want to know when to come without overthinking: the best windows are May-June (late spring) and September-October (early autumn).

For three reasons

  1. 01

    Mild temperatures

15-22 °C, comfortable for pedalling or walking without being too hot or cold.

  2. 02

    Few people

Nowhere near the July-August crush, and not the November-March tourist lull either.

  3. 03

    Forest at its best

Spring growth or autumn ochres, a lush landscape either way.

If you come in July-August, set off early. If you come in winter, check the weather forecast.

The 4 seasons

Each season has its magic

Weather, crowds, what you will see, pros and cons of each period. Spring and autumn are the recommended ones.

Top

March–May

Spring

The season that wakes the forest

  • 10–18° Temperature
  • 12–14 h Daylight
  • Low→Medium Crowds
  • Forest in bud (alders, poplars, ashes)
  • Wildflowers (orchids, anemones)
  • Rivers in full flow from snowmelt
  • Molina very active after her torpor
Pros

Few people in March-April. Vivid colours and clean air after the rains.

Cons

Rain likely — a light shell is a must. Muddy surface after showers.

Tip Easter week can be busy. Book ahead if it falls in March-April.

June–August

Summer

High season. Beautiful but crowded.

  • 18–26° Temperature
  • 15–16 h Daylight
  • High → Peak Crowds
  • Lush green forest, deep shade
  • Lower river flow, bathing spots open
  • Families with kids — the classic family season
  • Cultural events across the concejos
Pros

Plenty of daylight. Pleasant temperatures thanks to the forest shade.

Cons

Car parks full before 10:00. Bike booking essential.

Tip Come midweek if you can. August weekends = everything full.

Top

Sept–November

Autumn

The other great season, with the most spectacular colours.

  • 12–20° Temperature
  • 11–13 h Daylight
  • Low Crowds
  • Forest in ochres, yellows and reds
  • Mushrooms and fungi along the edges
  • Rivers at medium flow, crystal-clear water
  • Molina active, building up fat
Pros

October: peak colours + mild temperatures + few people.

Cons

More frequent rain from late October. Fewer daylight hours in November.

Tip Late September or the first two weeks of October — the best window of the year.

Dec–February

Winter

The quiet season. Beautiful but with harsher conditions.

  • 5–12° Temperature
  • 9–10 h Daylight
  • Very low Crowds
  • Bare, silent forest
  • Possible morning frosts
  • Occasional snow at higher altitudes
  • Molina in torpor — may not be visible
Pros

Trail practically empty. Long views through the leafless forest.

Cons

Slippery surface. Few daylight hours. Many cafes closed midweek.

Tip Doable for locals and anyone who knows the terrain. If it is your first visit, pick another season.

What to bring by season

Minimum kit we recommend depending on when you come. Everything fits in a small backpack — no technical gear needed.

Shoulder season

Variable weather. A rain shell is essential. Wrap up in the morning, lighter layers at midday.

  • Light rain jacket
  • Closed trainers
  • Morning beanie
  • Packable light coat

High season

Heat and heavy crowds. Protect yourself from the sun, stay hydrated and set off early to avoid the crush.

  • Cap + sunscreen
  • Water (2 litres)
  • Insect repellent
  • Light breathable clothing

Low season

Cold and few daylight hours. Thermal kit and head torch are essential. The surface can be slippery.

  • Thermal jacket + gloves
  • Buff or neck warmer
  • Head torch (little daylight)
  • Waterproof shoes + flask

Always in the backpack

Whatever the season, these 4 items should never be missing from your bag.

  • Head torch for the tunnels

  • Water + a snack
  • Charged phone

Events and moments

Dates marked on the calendar

Events, fiestas and special moments that may shape (or improve) your visit to the trail.

May

Brown bear mating season

In the wild zone — does not affect Molina but it is the period when FOA (Fundación Oso de Asturias) activates more monitoring work.

Easter

Heavy crowds

Booking a bike in advance is essential. It is the first tourism wave of the year.

August

Local fiestas

Cultural programming in Teverga, Proaza, Quirós and Santo Adriano. A good chance to discover the villages.

October

Chestnut Festival

Festivals in nearby concejos. Seasonal cuisine in the local restaurants.

Dec–Feb

Molina’s torpor

Partial hibernation. She may not be visible for weeks. If you are coming to see her, pick another season.

Bear Trail (Senda del Oso) across the seasons

Need help?

1.

When is the best time for the Bear Trail (Senda del Oso)?

Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are the best. Mild weather, few people, landscape at its finest. If you have to pick a single month, October ties everything together: autumn colours, pleasant temperatures and little crowd.

2.

Can the trail be done in summer with the heat?

Yes, no problem. A large part of the route runs under the shade of the riverside forest and passes through cool tunnels. Temperatures rarely exceed 28 °C in Asturias. Set off early (before 10:00) to avoid crowds and the midday heat.

3.

Is the Bear Trail open in winter?

Yes. The trail is open all year, it never closes. In winter the surface can be slippery from damp or ice, and there are few daylight hours — but it is rideable. The tunnels keep photovoltaic lighting even with little sun.

4.

Can you see Molina in winter?

It can be difficult. Brown bears enter torpor (partial hibernation) between December and February. Molina spends weeks sleeping in sheltered areas of the enclosure, sometimes without coming out. If you are coming specifically to see her, better spring, summer or autumn.

5.

Which month has the fewest people?

January and February, by far. The trail is practically left to the locals. If you are after total silence and have the kit for cold weather, those are the quietest options. Runners-up: March and November.

6.

Are there fiestas or special events?

In August, patron-saint fiestas in the concejos of Teverga, Proaza, Quirós and Santo Adriano — with cultural programming. In October, chestnut festivals and seasonal cooking at the local restaurants. In spring, pilgrimages in several villages.

For any season

Rent your bike on the date that suits you

We operate year-round with wide opening dates. In high season (July-August, long weekends, Easter), book at least a week ahead. In winter or midweek, letting us know the day before is enough.
