Molina's enclosure

What about the enclosure? Rules with dogs

Dogs aren't allowed at the enclosure viewpoint. It's a protected wildlife area run by the Fundación Oso de Asturias. Pets are forbidden to avoid stressing the captive bears.

But there are solutions:

Take turns at the viewpoint

One stays outside with the dog while the other sees Molina. The viewpoint takes 15-20 min and there's almost never a queue.

Leave them in the trailer in the shade

You can leave the dog in the trailer in the shade (if it's cool) for 15 min. Never in summer heat.

Visit the enclosure another day without the dog

It's right by the trail, free access year-round. Proaza car park 5 min on foot. That way you enjoy both.

Story of Molina's enclosure

Livestock mastiffs

What to do if you meet a mastiff on the route

At several spots there's livestock guarded by Leonese or Cantabrian mastiffs — very big dogs (50-80 kg) whose job is to protect the flock. They're not naturally aggressive, but they are territorial.

Leonese mastiff guarding a flock on the Bear Trail

Where they appear

Around Proaza

Sheep flocks in the pastures around the village.

Teverga branch · Caranga to Entrago

Mostly cattle, possible in high grazing season.

Tameza range (detours up high)

If you detour to Villanueva or climb to the mountain pastures.

The 4 golden rules

Go around the flock

Never cross a flock with your dog. Keep at least 50 m and pass behind or along a wide side.

Don't run or speed up

The mastiff reads fleeing as a threat. Walk or pedal calmly, no sudden pace changes.

Ignore the barking

They're territorial, not aggressive. They bark to warn you're near. Keep your dog close to you.

If it approaches, stop

Stop and sit your dog. The mastiff wants to check who you are. Once identified, it walks away on its own.

Quick answers to what dog owners ask us before coming to the Bear Trail.

Dog in trailer on the Bear Trail

Need help?

+34 644 199 430
1.

Can I bring my dog to the Bear Trail?

Yes. It's a greenway open to dogs year-round as long as they stay on the lead. The route is ideal: compacted gravel surface, forest shade most of the way, water fountains at every stop and rest areas with picnic tables.

2.

What dog trailers do you have?

Two sizes: standard up to 20 kg (€22/day) and XXL up to 30 kg (€30/day). Both with a single refundable deposit of €40. They include safety net, interior lead, front window and waterproof hood. The XXL has reinforced suspension.

3.

Can my dog run alongside the bike?

Only if they're used to running long distances (5+ km regularly). We recommend a hands-free bungee lead with a waist belt. Not advisable for city dogs that only walk, brachycephalic breeds (Bulldog, Pug, Boxer), puppies under 12 months or days over 25 °C.

4.

Are there water fountains for the dog on the route?

Yes, at 4 points: Entrago (start), Proaza (village centre), Buyera (finish, recreation area) and Tuñón (north access). All with wide spouts to fill bowls. Always carry a collapsible bowl so you don't depend only on public fountains.

5.

Can I enter Molina's enclosure with my dog?

No. It's a protected wildlife area run by the Fundación Oso de Asturias and pets are banned to avoid stressing the captive bears. If you're with someone, one stays outside for 15-20 min. If alone, better visit the enclosure on another day without the dog.

6.

What if I meet a livestock mastiff?

Don't approach the flock, go around it by at least 50 m, keep the dog on a short lead and walk calmly. Don't run: mastiffs read fleeing as a threat. Ignore the barking. If it comes to identify you, stop and sit your dog. Once it knows who you are, it walks away on its own.

7.

Is the trailer deposit expensive?

€40 single deposit (same for standard and XXL) in cash or Bizum when you pick up the kit. Fully refunded if the trailer comes back clean and undamaged. Basic cleaning (sweeping fur) is on us — only specific damage like tears or bite marks is deducted.

Everything ready before you come

Book now, pay when you get here

Choose the date, adult bike and the trailer you need based on your dog's weight. We don't ask for a card to book. The €40 deposit is paid at the shop (cash or Bizum) and returned when you hand the trailer back. Return transfer from Buyera included.
