Frequently asked questions about the Senda del Oso

The full Y shape is 36 km (11 km main trunk + 11 km Teverga branch + 14 km Quirós branch). The most popular tourist route is Entrago → Buyera, 18 km downhill. You can ride anything from 2 km (a short section) up to the full 36 km.

No. It is a downhill greenway with a 1.5% gradient — practically flat. Suitable for everyone, from children who have just learned to ride to grandparents on an e-bike. The compacted gravel surface is comfortable and there are no technical sections.

By bike at an easy pace, 2-3 hours with stops for the 18 km route. 3-4 hours if you add the detour to Valdemurio (28 km). On foot, 5-6 hours for the full 22 km route. Short sections from 25 min.

• Times per section

It depends on what you are after. Tuñón → Caranga (main trunk) packs in the Molina bear enclosure, Peñas Juntas and the longest tunnels — it is the most popular. Caranga → Entrago (Teverga branch) is the most dramatic, with the Valdecerezales gorge. Both are beautiful.

Yes, more than 30 tunnels carved into the rock during the 19th century for the mining railway. All of them have solar-powered lighting. The longest is 300 m and is on the Teverga branch. The short ones range from 20 to 80 m.

Yes. From 8-9 months in a rear baby seat (once the baby holds its head firmly). From 1 year in a child trailer. From 4 years on a tag-along. From 5-6 years on their own bike. The route is perfect for families.

• Step by step with children

Paca and Tola were the two brown bears that made the trail famous. Tola died in 2018 and Paca on 10 April 2025. Today Molina remains, a brown bear rescued in 2013 who lives in the same enclosure in Proaza. She can be watched for free from the viewpoint right by the trail.

Yes. The surface is very comfortable for walking. There are short sections from 2 km (Buyera → Molina bear enclosure) up to the full Entrago → Tuñón route (22 km, 5-6 h). You can combine walking out and returning by bus from Oviedo.

An adult bike costs 28 €/day. A children's bike 25 €. The baby seat 15 €. Trailers (child or dog) from 25 €. The e-bike 50 €. All prices include helmet, insurance, map, assistance and the return transfer from Buyera.

More than 200 Giant and Connor bikes checked every day. Adult frame sizes S/M/L/XL, children's 14"/20"/24", e-bikes, tandem, tag-along, tricycle and trailers (child and pet-friendly).

Yes. The battery lasts for the full 28 km route with the Valdemurio detour on medium assistance. If you ride on maximum the whole time, the battery covers the 18 km short route with room to spare. We hand the bike over at 100%.

Certified helmet, accident insurance, printed map, a face-to-face route briefing in the shop, on-route assistance in case of a puncture and the return transfer from Buyera included. No hidden extras.

• Details of what is included

Yes. In the shop we adjust the frame size (saddle height, handlebar position) and give you a couple of minutes to try it in the car park before you set off. If you are not happy with it, we swap it for another.

Yes. Baby seats (15 €), child trailers for 1-2 children (25 €), tag-alongs (25 €) and children's own bikes in frame sizes 14", 20" and 24" (25 €). All with a child-sized helmet.

The trail is very easy — flat, compacted surface, no traffic. People who haven't ridden in years pick it up quickly. If you have never ridden, it's best to practise at home for a couple of days beforehand. You can also do the trail on foot.

• On-foot option

Water, something to eat, a light rain jacket (Asturias is Asturias) and sun cream in summer. Nothing else. We provide the helmet and insurance.

• What the rental includes

Yes, always. We rent by reservation only: we don't open every day, and this way we guarantee your bike and frame size when you arrive. On weekends, bank holidays, Easter and July-August, book with more notice. Booking is free and without commitment: we don't ask for a card or payment details.

Yes. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before by WhatsApp or phone. No questions, no penalty. If you cancel with less than 24 h notice it is usually still fine — just talk to us.

Yes. Picnic tables in Buyera, Proaza and Tuñón. Drinking fountains in Entrago, Proaza, Buyera and Tuñón. Several bars with terraces in Proaza and Entrago. We give you a map with all the points marked.

Yes. It is a greenway exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists — there are no road crossings (all resolved by tunnels or bridges). There is no car traffic. Compacted surface with no dangerous loose stones.

• Family route details

Only if it is an all-terrain stroller with big wheels (≥30 cm with suspension). Urban strollers struggle with the surface. It is more comfortable to walk with the stroller along a short section (Proaza → enclosure → Proaza, 5 km) than to attempt the full route.

• Walking the trail

Each child pays their rate according to the equipment (baby seat 15 €, trailer 25 €, bike 25 €). We don't apply a discount for quantity. For very large families (5+ children) or school groups, a tailored quote.

• Groups and school trips

Yes. The trail is pet-friendly as long as the dog is kept on a leash. We have standard trailers up to 20 kg (25 €) and XXL up to 30 kg (32 €) — both with a 40 € deposit refundable when you return the trailer.

• Full guide with your dog

Only if your dog is used to running long distances. We recommend a hands-free bungee leash. It is not advisable for urban dogs, brachycephalic breeds (bulldog, pug), puppies or days above 25 °C.

• Pet-friendly recommendations

No. It is a protected wildlife area — pets are not allowed. The usual solution: one person waits outside for 15-20 min while the other visits the viewpoint. Or visit the enclosure another day without the dog.

• About Paca, Tola and Molina
• On the trail with your dog

You cancel free up to 24 h before or even on the same day. If you don't cancel and come, much of the trail runs through woodland and tunnels — in light rain it rides well. In heavy rain, we pick you up earlier in Buyera if you prefer. The child and dog trailers have a rain cover.

• Best time of year

May-June and September-October: best weather, few crowds and the landscape at its best. July-August is gorgeous but busier. Winter is quiet but with fewer daylight hours.

You call us or send a WhatsApp. Within 15-30 minutes someone is with you with tools. If the problem is serious (a major breakage), we bring another bike so you can carry on, or we pick you up earlier.

• How to get there step by step

Yes. Autos Bimenes (Pullmans Llaneza) from Oviedo Bus Station. The journey is around 55 minutes to Entrago. Handy to combine with our return transfer.

• Getting there by public transport

You finish the route in Buyera. You call us or send a WhatsApp. Within 15 minutes we are there with the van to take you and the bike back to Entrago, next to your car. Included in every rate, at no extra cost.
