Why it gets busy
Why it gets so busy at Easter
Easter and August are the two busiest weeks of the year. Car parks full before 10:00, restaurants needing a booking and specific bike models sold out days in advance.
-
Long bank holidays
— 3-5 days off in a row.
-
Better weather
compared with January-February.
-
Nature waking up
— flowers, bright green forest, active bear enclosure (Paca and Tola feeding in the sun).
-
Perfect family plan
— kids on holiday, time for short breaks.
-
Asturias is a strong destination
in spring — we compete with the coast, the Picos and the rest of the Camín Encantáu route.

Families
With kids at Easter
Big advantage: the kids are on holiday, with time to do the route at a relaxed pace. And the mild weather lets you stop for a sunny lunch in Caranga without anyone getting cold.
What to definitely book:
Child trailer with hood
(rain is likely).
Baby bike seat
if your baby is 8 months or older.
Kids bike
to fit a child who already rides (sizes 14", 20", 24").
Clothes for the little ones: warm coat + waterproof. April is sneaky — the sun’s out and 30 minutes later you get drizzle (chirimiri).
Mixed activities (not just biking): combine the route with the Parque de la Prehistoria in Teverga, the Casa del Oso in Proaza and the bear enclosure in Molina. Three plans by car or on foot to alternate with your bike day.

With your dog
With your dog at Easter
Perfect for travelling with a dog. Mild temperatures — no heat that limits the trailer or makes the dog suffer. A few key tips:
Book the pet-friendly trailer ahead of time
(standard for dogs up to 20 kg, XXL for up to 30 kg). We have few XXL units and they sell out fast at Easter.
€40 deposit
refunded when you bring the trailer back clean and undamaged.
The Paca and Tola enclosure does not allow dogs
. If you go in, one of you waits outside for 15-20 minutes with the dog in the shade.
Pet-friendly restaurants
in La Plaza and Proaza — ask at your accommodation, they usually have up-to-date references.
If it rains
If it rains during your visit
soft drizzle (chirimiri) is very manageable
Don’t cancel automatically. The and the trail is even nicer for it: fewer people, glistening damp forest, photogenic mist between the gorges. The tunnels work as a natural shelter if it really comes down.
free cancellation up to 24 h in advance
If the forecast points to a real storm (more than 8 mm/h sustained), on WhatsApp. No penalty, no explanations needed.
Indoor plan B for rainy days:
- Parque de la Prehistoria de Teverga (indoor, online booking).
- Casa del Oso in Proaza (indoor).
- Cueva Huerta (Fresnedo, Teverga) — guided visit, booking required.
- Sidrerías and restaurants across the valley (a long Asturian lunch on a rainy day is a plan in itself).
Kit
What to put in your backpack
Light windbreaker or rain jacket
(waterproof + breathable).
Thin base layer
(thermal or technical long-sleeve top).
Light fleece
for tunnels and lookouts.
Thin hat and gloves
optional for the tunnels.
Sunglasses
— there are sunny stretches in the open valley.
SPF 30+ sun cream
— even when overcast, April sun bites at altitude.
Small backpack with water
— there are fountains on the route, but bring 1.5 l per person.
Picnic
or cash for a sidrería — stops in Caranga, Entrago and Tuñón.
Camera or fully charged phone
— the gorges with April light are very photogenic.
No extra cost on the rental
What's included
Detailed packing by season in our full packing guide.
1. When does the Bear Trail get busy at Easter?
Maundy Thursday afternoon and Friday/Saturday/Sunday all day. Car parks are 80% full by 10:00. Better arrive before 09:30 or come midweek if you can.
2. Do I need to book my bike well in advance?
If you need specific models (kids trailer, baby seat, 14"-20"-24" bike, dog trailer), book 6-8 weeks ahead. For a standard adult or e-bike, 2-3 weeks usually works. Booking is with no upfront payment and free cancellation up to 24 h in advance.
3. Is the Bear Trail open at Easter?
Yes. The trail is a greenway on the old mining railway, open year-round. No seasonal closures. The tunnels are lit.
4. What if it rains every day?
Free cancellation up to 24 h in advance. Indoor plan B in Teverga: Parque de la Prehistoria, Casa del Oso, Cueva Huerta. All indoor, all open at Easter.
5. Is there accommodation available near the trail?
Yes, in Teverga, Proaza, Tuñón and Quirós. They fill up fast at Easter — book 2-3 months ahead if you can. List at list of accommodations nearby.
6. Are there any special Easter events in the area?
The big processions are in Oviedo and Avilés. In the small councils of the valley (Teverga, Proaza, Quirós) life is more rural than religious. There are local celebrations in La Plaza and Proaza, but they don’t affect use of the trail.
