Proaza is the municipality where Molina lives, the Cantabrian brown bear of the Fernanchín enclosure. It’s also home to the Peñas Juntas gorge, the Casa del Oso (Bear House interpretation centre), several tunnels from the old mining railway and a medieval old town with church and squares. It sits in the heart of the Senda del Oso (Bear Trail), 35 minutes by car from Oviedo.
This guide sums up the essentials for a day or a weekend in Proaza, signed from our neighbouring shop in Entrago, where we’ve been renting bikes for the trail since 2005.

5 must-sees in Proaza
1. Fernanchín bear enclosure
The semi-freedom facility where Paca and Tola lived (the cubs that arrived on 26 May 1996, originally named Selva and Charli) and where Molina lives today, rescued in 2013. Free and open access from the viewpoint right by the trail. With patience, you almost always spot her.
More detail in the full story of Paca, Tola and Molina.
2. Casa del Oso (Bear House)
Visitor centre run by the Fundación Oso de Asturias, designed to explain the recovery of the Cantabrian brown bear. Visit with panels, audiovisuals and a film. Ideal with kids before they head to the enclosure. Paid entry — check current opening times on the foundation’s site.
3. Peñas Juntas gorge
Narrow canyon carved by the Trubia river, with vertical limestone walls and several short linked tunnels from the old mining railway. One of the most photographed spots on the Bear Trail.
Technical detail in the gorges page.
4. Proaza old town
Small village with a medieval square, parish church, restored defensive tower and several cider houses with terraces. A natural lunch stop when riding the Bear Trail by bike.
5. Bermiego yew tree
A few km from Proaza (technically in the Quirós municipality but very close geographically), a thousand-year-old yew declared a Natural Monument — one of the oldest trees in Spain (estimated 2,000 years).

When to visit Proaza
- Spring: optimal. Active bear enclosure (the bears are more visible).
- Summer: pretty but busy. Book ahead if you sleep here.
- Autumn: spectacular colours in the valley woods.
- Winter: quiet but short on daylight. Molina is still active.
Our advice
If you come to see Molina, give yourself at least 30 minutes at the viewpoint. Sometimes she’s hidden or asleep. She tends to be more active early in the morning and at dusk.
If you’re going to ride the Bear Trail by bike, the plan that works best is: rent in Entrago (Teverga), do the section to Buyera (18 km), have lunch in Proaza at midday, visit the enclosure in the afternoon and return with our transfer to Entrago.
Book a bike
If you want to combine Proaza with the Bear Trail by bike, bookings come with no upfront payment.
