Teverga has it all: a greenway with bears, a replica cave with rock art, mountains with beech woods and stone villages. It sits in the heart of south-western Asturias, 40 minutes from Oviedo, and one day is enough for the main sights. With a weekend, you can take it slow.
This guide covers the essentials: the six spots you have to see, how to get there, where to eat, where to sleep and when to come. Signed from Entrago, where we’ve been renting bikes for the Bear Trail (Senda del Oso) since 2005 and know the council inside out.
The essentials in 30 seconds

6 must-see spots in Teverga
1. The Bear Trail (Teverga branch)
11 km greenway between Entrago and Caranga. It’s the section that starts at our shop and crosses the Valdecerezales canyon, one of the most spectacular industrial landscapes in Asturias. About 45 min by bike going downhill. From Entrago you can carry on 7 km more to Buyera along the main trunk, with return transfer included if you rent with us.
Full detail in the Bear Trail guide and the sections.
2. Teverga Prehistory Park
Museum opened in 2007 with a replica cave that reproduces rock paintings from Altamira, Tito Bustillo, Niaux and Chauvet. Visit takes 1 h 30. Paid entry (check current prices and opening times on the official site). Highly recommended with kids 6 to 12. It’s in San Salvador, 2 km from Entrago.
3. Cueva Huerta
Natural cave with more than 14 km of mapped galleries, declared a Natural Monument. Access requires a guided visit booked in advance through the Teverga tourist office. Not recommended for claustrophobics. The cave is near Fresnedo.
4. Montegrande beech wood
Spectacular beech forest in the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Natural Park. The best autumn shot in the council — mid-October to early November. 5 km hiking route from La Cortina. Easy-medium difficulty.
5. San Pedro de Teverga collegiate church
12th-century Romanesque temple (with origins from the 11th century). One of the jewels of Asturian Romanesque, with notable sculptural detail. It’s in La Plaza, next to the main square. Free entry during services; interior with medieval sarcophagi.
6. Villages of the valley
Worth driving slowly through Teverga’s villages — Entrago, La Plaza, San Salvador, Villa de Sub, Páramo, Carrea — and stopping at the granaries, the small churches and the fountains. Half an hour in the car with no fixed goal makes a perfect afternoon.

Where to eat in Teverga
La Plaza has most of the council’s restaurants: traditional Asturian cooking, fabada, carne roxa, cachopo, local cheeses. Set menus around 15-20 €/person and à la carte between 25 and 40 €. Classic cider houses with fair prices.
In Entrago and Páramo there are a couple of bars with terraces for quick food or an Asturian ham sandwich. Near the Bear Trail, in Buyera and Proaza, there’s more choice — see the accommodation guide for help on where to stop.
Tables are usually free without booking outside July-August. In summer and at weekends, call ahead.
Where to sleep in Teverga
Teverga has a wide range of rural accommodation: 3-star hotels, apartments, rural houses. The most in-demand options are in La Plaza (more services) and in Entrago (right by the trail).
If you plan to ride the Bear Trail, sleeping 5 m from our shop saves you a 20-min drive the next day. Options: Hotel Alesga Rural, Apartamentos Balcón Real, Hotel Casa Manolo.
Average price: 55-90 €/night for a double in mid-season. In July-August and on bank holiday weekends, expect +30%.

When to visit Teverga
- Spring (May-June): pleasant temperature, long days, nature at its peak. The best season.
- Summer (July-August): good weather but the trail gets crowded. Book ahead. Possible hot days (>30 °C).
- Autumn (September-October): spectacular. Beech wood colours, few people, new cider. The most photogenic.
- Winter (December-March): quiet but short days and cold. The Bear Trail stays open except in storms. Montegrande beech wood gets occasional snow.
Our advice
“If you come for one day, ride the trail and have lunch in Proaza. If you come for two, add the Prehistory Park and a quiet afternoon in the villages”. It’s the plan that gets repeated most and the one that works best.
Don’t overthink the itinerary. Teverga is more nature than monument — the value lies in pedalling through the canyon, smelling the woodland, stopping at a viewpoint, having a coffee in La Plaza. No need to rush around ticking sights.
