Do you have to pay to park on the Senda del Oso?

No. All the main car parks (Entrago, Proaza, Buyera, Tuñón and Caranga) are free and have no time restrictions.

Can I leave the car overnight?

Yes, there is no closing time. For peace of mind, the fewer valuables you leave inside, the better.

Is there covered or guarded parking?

No. These are open-air public car parks. In larger villages such as La Plaza (Teverga) there is some paid covered parking.

Where do I park if I come in a camper van?

In the standard car parks if there is room and the length of the vehicle fits. Overnight stays require checking the rules of each municipality.

What time should I arrive in high season?

Before 10:00 in July, August, bank holidays and Easter. From 13:00-14:30 spaces also free up as people finish the short route.

Parking on the Senda del Oso (Bear Trail): where to leave the car

All the main access points to the Senda del Oso (Bear Trail) have free parking with no restrictions: Entrago, Proaza, Buyera, Tuñón and Caranga. In high season (July-August, bank holidays and Easter) they fill up before 10:00 in the morning, so it is worth arriving early or parking in a neighbouring village and walking 5-10 minutes. This guide covers each car park with approximate spaces, access and what you should know. Written from Entrago, where we have had our bike hire shop since 2005.

The 5 main car parks

Entrago (Teverga)

Around 60 free spaces right by the trail, at the start of the Teverga branch. Next to it you will find our hire shop (5 metres away), a bar and a toilet. It fills up in July and August between 10:00 and 11:00; if you arrive at that time, try La Plaza, 2 km away. It is the best option for those riding the trail by bike with a return transfer, school groups and large parties.

Proaza

Around 20 spaces next to the village centre, plus other areas spread around the village. It sits in the middle of the main trunk, with bars, cider houses, the church and the Casa del Oso a stone’s throw away. It fills up at weekends and in July-August. Ideal for those going to see the bear enclosure and eat in the village.

Buyera (Proaza)

Around 30 spaces in the recreation area, right by the trail, at the end of the Teverga branch and the start of the trunk. It has a picnic area, a fountain and a seasonal bar. It fills up very quickly in high season. It is the transfer pick-up point if you have ridden the route from Entrago, and a good spot for families with a packed lunch.

Tuñón (Santo Adriano)

Around 40 spaces beside the recreation area, at the northern start of the main trunk. Nearby you have a picnic area, a fountain and the pre-Romanesque church of Santo Adriano. It only fills up halfway in high season, so it is a good alternative if Entrago is full. Perfect for riding the route uphill (less common) or the short Tuñón → Proaza stretch.

Caranga (Proaza)

Around 15 spaces at the fork between the trunk and the Quirós branch. It has few services nearby, but it rarely fills up, so it is the backup option if the others fail. Useful above all for riding the Quirós branch, far less visited.

What time people arrive

From our own experience, this is what we see every season:

Low season (November-March): spaces to spare at any time.
Spring on weekdays: people arrive around 11:00, no problem.
May-June weekends: better to arrive before 10:30.
Easter, July, August and bank holidays: before 10:00, or wait until 15:00, when people leave to eat.

What to do if everything is full

Park in the nearest village. From La Plaza (Teverga) to Entrago it is 2 km, a 25-minute walk almost always in the shade.
Go to the other end of the trail. If Entrago is full, Tuñón probably is not. There are 22 km between them, but only 20 minutes by car.
Wait a little. Between 13:00 and 14:30 people who finish the short route leave; it is worth it if you have time.
Switch the order of your plan. Visit the Parque de la Prehistoria in Teverga in the morning and save the bike route to set off from 15:00.

Parking for motorhomes

There is no dedicated motorhome area at the start of the trail. Motorhomes can use the standard car parks if there is space and they fit (mind the length). For overnight stays, the rules vary by council, so it is best to ask on arriving in the village or at the tourist office. The nearest motorhome areas are in La Plaza (Teverga) and in Grado, about 20 minutes away by car.

Accessibility

The car parks at Entrago, Tuñón and Proaza have reserved spaces for people with reduced mobility beside the access ramps to the trail. The greenway surface (compacted gravel, 1.5% gradient) is suitable for an electric wheelchair or handbike on the flat sections; the best are Buyera → Proaza (4 km) and Proaza → Tuñón (6 km).

Our best tip

If you come in summer, leave home an hour earlier than you had planned. It is what we say most often: arriving at 9:30 instead of 10:30 changes your day. You park stress-free, see the bear enclosure without the crowds and start the route feeling fresh.
